Drew Whitemore was born 1965 in the UK. Whitemore has been an artist and maker for as long as he can remember. As a child he was influenced by the activities of his creative mother, tapestry, macramé, knitting etc. were normal as were attempts to make shoes and various other creations. He enjoyed trying all aspects of creativity through school and into his early working life particularly with pyrography and leatherwork. Many years of travelling working as a street artist and musician through Europe, the Middle East and Asia also influenced him heavily. Drill work is a culmination of all his experiences. He uses a small hand held drill to pierce thin board repeatedly and then backlight the work using LED lights.
His early work has been experimental in nature, learning to use the tool and what can be done with it. More recently Whitemore is particularly inspired by nature and science, and the left-right brain balancing act which seems to me to be a fundamental of humanity. He likes to use a deliberately planned or plotted approach, a grid or plan applied to the board which he can then expand along organic lines attempting to capture an idea of oneness and the explosion of life from that oneness. The big bang, chaos, stillness, explosion, he is interested in the extent of the imagined idea and how in an age where we have such a prolific quantity of scientific knowledge and imagery of the micro and macro, what the big picture may be beyond God. He has sold work in the UK and worldwide to collectors in Hong Kong, Switzerland, USA and Australia, and also on a commercial scale in design projects.
Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Drew Whitemore.
