Irish artist James May paintings inhabit a created life, a conduit to an inner expression. Texture and colour appear as the initial unifying theme in the work, but after a lifetime painting with shapes, colours and textures running riot before him, it has many subtle things to say.
Landscape, coastal scenes and heads occupy the current themes, sometimes busy, sometimes peaceful.
James believes his painting is analogous to life itself; work over time has developed a complex unique expression. Although the materials are mixed and sometimes unusual the subject is ideas and emotion, not the materials and how they are used. He does not try to paint pretty pictures although to some that is thankfully what they find attractive and do purchase. His approach, as many artists, can never truly be put in words, trying to take and make viewers think outside the very visual world of the 21st century.
“If the childish nature stops them for a minute to journey in this bombarding digital and printed onslaught, I have succeeded”.
Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing some of the works of James May.
