Maurice Sapiro was born in 1932, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees from The Eastman School of Music, of The University of Rochester in 1954 - '55. Sapiro’s art career started in 1957, with exhibitions at The Little Studio, The City Centre Gallery, The National Arts Club, and The National Academy of Design, all in New York City. Since then, he has exhibited in galleries in Connecticut. He has work in the permanent collection of The New Britain Museum of American Art, CT, and has work in many private and corporate collections. He has published articles and books on clay form modelling methods, built his own harpsichord, taught himself a high level of colour photography and did his own colour processing.
He has dabbled in inventing and in optics as well, all the while, however, continuing to experiment with painting in watercolour and in oil. “Painting, like life, is a journey. And, as with any journey, it’s the people you meet along the way who leave the most lasting impressions. In my 60 year journey as a painter, I have been fortunate. The dealers, patrons, and friends I have met have been the best.” Sapiro paints landscapes and still life, many of which explore an on-going preoccupation with light. Fascinated by ‘the moment when natures fuses light and air, and creates a work of art’, Sapiro captures the ethereal, spiritual, magical tones, light and mood of nature. In delicately and subtly applied glazes, his images explore the moods of morning and evening on marshes and rivers of the area. His paintings often capture that incredible moment when land meets sky, and he manages to convey a strong sense of atmosphere in a literal sense – air and light coming together.
Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Maurice Sapiro.
