Tomas Nittner

Tomas Nittner
Tomas Nittner was born 1942 in Eger, and today lives in Cheb in the Czech Republic. He studied Visual Arts and Painting at the Academia di Brera, Milano Italy and Graphic Design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Ulm Germany. In 1972 Nittner worked for three years at the Design Office of the Olympic Games in Munich followed by an extended stay in Mexico. From there he moved on to New York City for over seven years, working for various design offices and having his first exhibitions of his work and in 1975 return to Munich, Germany. Nittner works in all materials and almost always in series: pastel, acrylics, oil, and mixed media. For almost 15 years he has busied himself with series of mythological themes like the "Odyssey", "Ikarus", and "Prometheus". He has also been working as a professional photographer and does small video pieces for art's sake and for musician friends. In the 90's he produced a series of sculptures from old dilapidated chairs, automobile tires and steel.

Nittner came a long way from almost figurative drawing and painting to a totally informal and abstract way of expression over a period of 15 years. Although his canvases are purely non-figurative there is yet a poetic content, helped by the various titles and names the artist bestows on his work. Most of the times he will sit down in front of the easel after a painting session and let his mind wander, searching what the images on the canvas provoke in words. Of course, these words are just a mere hint - the viewer is free to think up his or her very own stories. Over an active painting period of some 20 years Nittner has had some 80 exhibitions in Germany, Greece, France, Italy and the United States.

Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Tomas Nittner.
