Ulrich Van Brodt

Ulrich Van Brodt
Ulrich Van Brodt is surrealistic, deconstructivistic in his mind and what comes out in his artwork is the result of that, he is inspired by himself and his own work or the feelings from viewing others work. He works on this kind of lumino-graphic art brut photography for almost 15 years, using the camera as an instrument for painting in the first place, it all started on conventional film. “There is one question many people asked me watching my original canvas prints: "Was it you who painted this?" The answer is: Yes and no - yes, it is my picture and no, I did not use a brush so it's up to you to decide whether it is a painting, photography or both.” As one of his favourite interests is neurobiology and the creative process in human perception he is not interested in taking photos that show what is visible as a fact of the outside world. Instead of this he takes a step back behind the eye and have a closer look on what could be seen, which is of course absolutely individual.

The subjects photographed are just the raw material and the camera is used in its operative function to make and not to take pictures. The pictures are - if ever - just being planned by intuition and for this Stulle says he is always the first one to be surprised what was there behind the scenes - just like somebody who closes his eyes to have a look at the inner representation of what he had seen before. Stulle is trying to hit the borderline between inside and outside reality through art brut and generative photography.

Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Ulrich Van Brodt.
