Jean Frater

Jean Frater is a multidisciplinary artist who lives with her family in Chicago. She has been focusing on painting and drawing for the past 7 years, working with patterns and perception. She graduated with a BS in Philosophy, and received her MFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago. Fraters work contemplates perception, how meaning is determined or shifted; and how the architecture of our physicality performs, records, and digests our visual world. The idea of her work is to turn the lens inward, focus on how we perceive something, while we are in the act of perceiving it. Inherent in this notion, is the concept of time, a slow unfolding of the reality which we are presented with, an understanding that we can look at it one way; read it another.

It can be simultaneously general and specific, and the way it is understood is not separate from our body and the space we occupy, as maker and viewer. The lines are utilitarian and minimal, but steeped with meaning and multiplicity: as text, or as individual mark. Each work begins by setting up the conceptual framework, which is then carried out by hand; each line or mark or word leaves traces of emotion, failures, fatigues or excitements. Each mark is handmade and although repetitive, there is something interesting that happens in the slight differentiation, something that cannot happen with a machine. Frater is interested in language and exponential associations, as well as slippages of meaning; subsequently her paintings and drawings are often geometrically built from simple forms that house polarities: working through associations, puns, and design.

Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Jean Alexander Frater.
