Spencer Selby

Poet, artist and film historian, Spencer Selby was born and raised in the American midwest.

His film study has yielded two seminal reference works: Dark City: The Film Noir (1984) and The Worldwide Film Noir Tradition (2013). In San Francisco in the mid-80s he put out SINK, the first desktop published magazine of experimental poetry in America, which featured many key Language Poets. This was followed by a stint as coordinator of the Canessa Park Reading Series in North Beach from 1987-93. After that came the creation of Selby’s List of Experimental Poetry/Art Magazines, which has endured online as an important source of info for innovative writers and artists around the world.

Selby has been creating both visual work and poetry for decades. His first poetry book was published in 1989, followed by his first visual collection in 1990. These two disciplines have informed each other, fueling a multi-pronged creative practice whose development has accelerated over the years. To date he has brought out nine poetry books and five compilations of visual work. His art has appeared in group shows and he was co-editor of the visual poetry magazine Score. He has performed work and presented slide shows in many North American cities and in Europe. Spencer Selby currently lives in Ames, Iowa.

"Panavision" was inspired by one historical correspondence: The great age of wide screen Technicolor in movies began about the same time that Abstract Expressionism really took off and became a watershed in the history of American art.

Art on Fashion® is honoured to be showcasing the works of Spencer Selby.
